Newsboys Nail It in Penticton
Christian Rock artists Newsboys brought the mostly full SOEC house to its feet by drawing on past hits, brand new tunes, some dcTalk hits now that Michael Tait has joined the group, a very cool light show courtesy of multiple LED panels hung behind the band, and a combination of great showmanship and a high level of energy. This band kicked it live big time.

With all eyes focused on the main stage while the band started to play, Tait appeared from the other end of the arena on a satellite stage connected by a narrow runway to the main platform. By the time he made it to the main stage the audience was fully engaged in what was to be an exciting performance shared by the band and their fans alike.

Drummer Duncan Phillips, the longest running member of the group, guitarist Jody Davis, and keyboardist Jeff Frankenstein played with that mix of passion, authenticity, feel and groove, and with an obvious comfort with the set list that only comes from a lot of years playing together. The energy never dipped, even while doing slower numbers or moving the whole band out to the tiny satellite stage for a medley of older tunes. This band remained connected to the crowd right through to the final encore piece and left them in that curious state of being filled but still wanting more.

Both Newsboys and Tait’s former dcTalk have had mega-hits in the Christian Rock and Worship genres, and some of these, such as “He Reigns” and “It’s my Will”, brought screams of delight from the fans as they recognized them instantly and sang along.

Christian themed or not, this was a rock concert. The energy was intense, the entertainment factor or performance was of the highest calibre, and the show was as close to perfectly paced as it can get. Michael Tait is a great singer and frontman. The band rocks like nobody’s business. This concert was what performing live is all about; great tunes well known by the audience, passionately played by a band that loves what it’s doing, funky light show and other effects, and a real connection between singer and audience. If they are coming to your town, and you dig the Christian Rock thing, grab some friends, get some tickets, and go.
